As Australians prepare to travel during the Anzac Day weekend, it’s important to be aware of the varying double demerit laws across different states. Many will take to the roads, yet not all jurisdictions will implement these penalties uniformly.
Double demerit periods for Anzac Day will commence on Friday, April 24, and will extend through to Monday, April 27, in specific areas. Only New South Wales, Western Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory impose double demerits around public holidays, making their rules more stringent during this time. Offences such as speeding, drink or drug driving, and not wearing a seatbelt will incur double the usual demerits during this period.
In contrast, Queensland adopts a distinct approach by enforcing double demerits year-round for certain repeat offences, including using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h. Thus, motorists in Queensland face heightened penalties for these actions if repeated within a twelve-month timeframe.
States like Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and the Northern Territory do not implement any double demerit points throughout the year. However, authorities in these regions still encourage responsible driving during the busy Anzac Day weekend.
It’s crucial for all drivers to stay informed and drive safely, regardless of which rules apply in their state.
