A recent fire ant nest discovery on a footpath in Cotswold Hills, Toowoomba, has raised concerns in a Queensland community, leading to immediate action by the National Fire Ant Eradication Program. The nest, located at a new development site, has been eradicated, and teams are now inspecting nearby properties for any additional nests.

To contain the situation, officials are conducting surveillance and treatment within a 500-metre radius of the site, monitoring for further ant activity. Investigations are underway to determine how these invasive ants have arrived in the area, with an emphasis on the materials brought in during construction or landscaping.

Marni Manning, General Manager of Operations for the eradication program, highlighted that human activities are the primary means of fire ants spreading, as they can easily hitch rides in materials such as soil, mulch, hay, and on various gardening or construction equipment.

Under Queensland legislation, residents must actively prevent the spread of pests, including fire ants. Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines exceeding $500,000 or possible imprisonment for up to three years, according to Manning. The local community is urged to report any sightings within 24 hours and to facilitate access for crews inspecting properties. Additionally, residents should exercise caution when transporting soil, plants, or equipment that could harbour these pests.

Fire ants are notorious for being among the world’s most dangerous invasive species, posing significant threats to agriculture and wildlife. Ranging from 2mm to 6mm in size, they feature a copper-brown body with a darker abdomen, and are known to swarm and sting aggressively if their nest is disturbed.

Community members can report suspected fire ant sightings through the government’s online reporting form or by calling 132 ANT (13 22 68). Authorities are taking this matter seriously to ensure the safety and biosecurity of Queensland’s environment.
