Veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson has reported that players from Collingwood claimed that Carlton’s Elijah Hollands indicated to them he had been drinking during their recent game. Hollands had a minimal impact on the game, recording only one disposal and was benched late, as footage showcasing his erratic behaviour circulated on social media.
In response to the incident, Carlton released a statement describing it as a mental health episode. The 23-year-old forward has previously spoken about his struggles with panic attacks and alcohol abuse, as well as mental health issues he faced in 2025. However, SEN journalist Sam Edmund later reported on Friday that Carlton had dismissed any suggestions of alcohol or substance abuse being behind Hollands’ conduct that evening.
Wilson suggested that there are conflicting narratives regarding Hollands’ state during the match, with Collingwood sources asserting that he told their players he had been drinking. While Edmund reported that drugs were not involved, Wilson expressed uncertainty about the source of that information and whether Hollands was drug tested.
Wilson elaborated, noting that there were indications of high anxiety and a mental health episode, prompting questions about Carlton’s medical team’s decisions during the match. She raised concerns over possible medical negligence, suggesting that the club’s head of football, Chris Davies, and CEO, Graham Wright, should have been more involved in the situation.
Wilson described a scenario in which Hollands spoke to coach Michael Voss during the game, indicating he did not wish to be substituted—a decision both she and others found questionable in retrospect. When pressed about whether Hollands communicated directly to Collingwood players that he had been drinking, she pointed out that such details remain unverified but have not been categorically denied by Carlton.
The club is currently prioritising Hollands’ wellbeing and has chosen not to comment on the media’s speculation surrounding the incident. Moreover, it is unclear whether Hollands will participate in the upcoming ANZAC Day match against Fremantle.
The AFL has emphasized that player health and safety are paramount and has requested Carlton to report back following their review of Hollands’ fitness to play. As the situation develops, the AFL continues to engage with the club regarding the matter.
