Carlton Football Club is facing significant scrutiny for allowing forward Elijah Hollands to play during their recent defeat against Collingwood, particularly given the unsettling footage that has surfaced regarding his performance. The 23-year-old exhibited erratic behaviour on the field, prompting questions about why he was permitted to play and why he wasn’t substituted sooner when problems became apparent.

Fans captured troubling moments, including Hollands struggling to kick the ball during warm-ups and displaying odd behaviour throughout the match. He managed just one disposal—a smothered kick—in the game, before being benched late in the fourth quarter, with Coach Michael Voss describing him as “emotional” and “shattered” post-game.

Reports suggest that Hollands may have experienced a mental health episode during the match, rather than issues stemming from substance use. This follows his admission earlier in the year of suffering a panic attack during a game and ongoing battles with anxiety and alcohol-related concerns. Despite troubling pre-game footage, the club reportedly did not see any warning signs about his readiness to play.

Remarkably, while participating in the match, Hollands disclosed to Collingwood players that he wasn’t feeling well. Although he did not register any statistics by half-time, he remained on the field for a significant part of the third quarter before being taken out. Questions arise as to why the coaching staff did not observe his struggles sooner, especially considering his prior history of panic attacks.

The club is currently under investigation by the AFL, while Voss noted that Hollands felt he had let the team down. However, if the coaching staff believed this to be a mental health crisis, it raises concerns about their delayed action. The situation has become increasingly troubling, especially given Hollands had expressed joy in returning to the game and had shown promising form earlier in the season.

Additionally, he had participated in community engagement early in the week, visiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Reports have emerged that Hollands struggled to sleep the night before the match and that his heart rate was being monitored during the game. Despite this, he was played for over 60% of the match, drawing criticism from commentators and fans alike for not recognising the need for immediate intervention.

Until Carlton offers an official statement, the specifics surrounding the club’s decision-making process remain unclear. Hollands will likely require some time away from football for mental health considerations, which may affect his participation in the upcoming Anzac Day clash against Fremantle.
