Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has highlighted plans for an immigration policy that reinforces the 5 per cent home deposit scheme exclusively for Australian citizens. Speaking on 2GB ahead of an address in Sydney, Taylor emphasised that the initiative is intended to assist young Australians in securing their first homes.
Introduced by the Albanese government last year, the deposit scheme facilitates first-time buyers in obtaining a home with just a 5 per cent down payment, as opposed to the standard 20 per cent. However, Taylor criticises the current policy for including permanent residents in its eligibility criteria, asserting that it should be limited solely to Australian citizens.
Additionally, Taylor indicated that his upcoming speech would outline these restrictions clearly. His stance aligns with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party, which has long advocated for tightening access to the home deposit programme.
Beyond the deposit scheme, the Coalition’s immigration framework will also implement social media screenings for all migrant applications. This encompasses a commitment to deport individuals who contravene Australian values.
With these proposals, the Coalition aims to reshape the immigration landscape while ensuring that housing support prioritises Australians.
