Angus Taylor, the leader of the federal opposition, recently spoke on 2GB while previewing a speech in Sydney where he would detail a proposed strict immigration policy. Taylor referred to the government’s home deposit scheme, stating that it is intended to assist young Australian citizens in purchasing homes. He expressed concerns over the existing policy, which allows permanent residents to access a 5 per cent home deposit scheme—introduced by the Albanese government last year—designed to help first-time buyers by significantly reducing the deposit needed for home purchases from 20 per cent to 5 per cent.

In his upcoming speech, set for 11 am, Taylor plans to announce plans to limit access to this scheme solely to Australian citizens. He believes that the government’s current approach undermines its purpose. Additionally, political support for limiting the scheme to citizens has come from Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party.

The Coalition’s broader immigration strategy includes measures such as implementing social media screening for all migrant applications and enforcing deportation for migrants who violate Australian values. Taylor’s remarks underline the opposition’s focus on prioritising Australian citizens in housing initiatives and broader immigration reform aimed at enhancing national integrity and values.
