The A2 Milk Company has announced a recall of three batches of baby formula imported to the United States, following the discovery of cereulide, a potent toxin. This news has negatively impacted the company’s shares, which plummeted by 12% on the ASX, reducing its market value by hundreds of millions of dollars.
Cereulide can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting within a short time frame after consumption. While these symptoms typically resolve on their own, infants are at increased risk for dehydration due to their less developed immune systems. The affected formula, A2 Platinum Premium, is designed for infants aged 0 to 12 months and was recalled as a precaution after compliance tests instituted by New Zealand’s food regulatory authority.
More than 16,428 units were sold across various platforms, including the A2 Milk Company’s website, Amazon, and Meijer stores in the US. Fortunately, the company confirmed that there have been no reported cases of illness related to the recalled products, and the affected batches were only distributed in the US.
To ensure safety, A2 Milk Company CEO David Bortolussi emphasised that the wellbeing of customers remains their top priority. He assured that formula available in Australia, New Zealand, China, and other markets is not affected by this recall.
The recalled products, along with their corresponding batch numbers and use-by dates, are as follows:
– Batch number: 2210269454, use-by date: 15/07/2026
– Batch number: 2210324609, use-by date: 21/01/2027
– Batch number: 2210321712, use-by date: 15/01/2027
Customers who have purchased the recalled formula are advised to stop using it immediately, dispose of it, or return it to the point of purchase for a refund. The company further urges that any infants presenting symptoms related to the toxin should seek medical attention right away.
In light of this situation, A2 Milk Company is committed to maintaining high safety standards, and they strive to keep parents and caregivers informed about the safety of their products.
