A sniffer dog has successfully assisted in the discovery of a significant heroin shipment concealed within a suitcase at Sydney Airport. Authorities have apprehended three men accused of attempting to import a total of 14 kilograms of the drug after arriving on flights from Thailand on April 23.
Officers from the Australian Border Force (ABF) conducted bag checks on two men, aged 35 and 36, soon after their arrival. They allegedly found hidden plastic bags within the lining of their carry-on luggage, each containing 4.5 kilograms of an off-white powder that later tested positive for heroin. Upon being approached by authorities, the two fled through the airport, triggering a pursuit. A member of the public intervened to help capture the 35-year-old, while officers employed pepper spray during the arrest. The 36-year-old was apprehended several days later, on April 28, in Surry Hills. A third suspect, aged 34, who arrived on a different flight on the same day, was also arrested, with his bag reportedly containing a similar concealed heroin stash.
Footage released by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) captures the sniffer dog performing its duties, indicating that it had detected something unusual near a small suitcase. This reaction is a clear signal of suspicious activity. All three men now face charges for their role in importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, an offence which carries a potential life sentence.
Detective Superintendent Davina Copelin from the AFP emphasised the commitment of their agency, in partnership with the ABF, to combat drug trafficking and dismantle criminal syndicates that pose a threat to Australian society. She warned that involvement in drug importation leads to severe legal consequences, including the possibility of life imprisonment.
ABF Superintendent Elke West highlighted that the Australian Border Force serves as the primary defence against the entry of harmful substances, like heroin, into the community. He reassured the public that ABF officers are constantly trained and equipped with advanced technologies to uncover illicit imports, despite evolving concealment tactics used by criminal organisations.
This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Australia to combat drug trafficking and protect communities from the dangers associated with illicit drugs.
