Authorities are currently investigating an incident involving a male passenger aboard the Carnival Splendor cruise ship, which was en route to Sydney. The passenger reportedly jumped overboard approximately 30 km north-east of Moreton Island, Queensland, during the night.
Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed that the passenger’s family notified the ship’s crew, prompting them to alert the relevant authorities. Following this notification, a spokesperson for Carnival stated that the cruise line is fully cooperating with the ongoing search and rescue operations.
According to the spokesperson, CCTV footage reviewed by the crew substantiated the account that the guest climbed over the safety railing before jumping into the water. The Carnival Splendor is actively aiding search efforts as it navigates towards Sydney, where it is expected to provide further assistance once it docks.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has spearheaded the search operation, deploying its Challenger jets based in Cairns and Melbourne, alongside five rescue helicopters from the Brisbane region, and six surface vessels, with support from the Queensland Police. The effort aims to locate the missing passenger swiftly and effectively.
The Carnival Splendor, measuring 952 feet (290 metres), is designed to accommodate over 3,000 passengers and 1,150 crew members. It operates primarily in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, according to information from Carnival Australia’s website.
In light of the distressing situation, Carnival’s Care Team is offering support to the family of the missing individual, keeping them in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
