BRISBANE: Gout Gout, the talented young sprinter from Ipswich, faces a challenging path toward achieving his goal of a sub-10-second 100 metres at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships. During the under-20 100m semi-finals on Saturday afternoon, Gout encountered a significant setback, as he had to compete against a harsh headwind of -2.2 metres per second at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre. Despite these unfavourable conditions, he completed the race with a time of 10.44 seconds, securing his spot in the final as the fastest qualifier among the semi-final heats.

Remarkably, just ten minutes after Gout’s heat, a different wind condition of +1.7 metres per second was recorded in one of the semi-final heats for the women’s under-20 100m, showcasing how dramatically the conditions shifted. Gout will compete in the 100m final later that day at 2:20 pm, and he is looking to improve upon his personal best of exactly 10 seconds, which he achieved on the same track in February.

Gout has previously recorded impressive times of 9.99 seconds on two occasions during last year’s national senior championships in Perth, although those performances were marred by illegal wind conditions. He aims to join an elite group of Australian sprinters who have run a wind-legal sub-10-second 100m, a feat achieved only by Patrick Johnson and his close competitor Lachlan Kennedy. The national record currently stands at 9.93 seconds, set by Johnson in Japan in 2003. Kennedy himself has surpassed the 10-second barrier three times, with a notable time of 9.98 seconds in Kenya last year and two runs of 9.96 seconds at the recent national senior championships in Sydney.

As the day progresses, all eyes will be on Gout as he seeks to realise his ambition on the track.
