BRISBANE: Gout Gout is grappling with unpredictable winds in his quest for a sub-10-second 100-metre sprint at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships. The Ipswich teenager faced tough luck in the semi-finals of the under-20 100m event on Saturday, enduring a -2.2 metres per second headwind at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre.

Despite these challenging conditions, Gout recorded a time of 10.44 seconds, securing his place in the final as the fastest qualifier among the three semi-final heats. Remarkably, just ten minutes after his heat, a women’s under-20 100m semi-final experienced a favourable wind reading of +1.7mps, showing just how quickly conditions can change.

Gout’s final is set for 2.20pm on Saturday, where he hopes to improve on his personal best of 10 seconds, achieved on the same track back in February. Notably, he has clocked a time of 9.99 seconds twice during the last national senior championships in Perth, though those times were marred by illegal wind conditions.

He aims to join an elite group of only three Australians who have run a wind-legal sub-10-second 100m, following in the footsteps of Patrick Johnson and his rival Lachlan Kennedy. Johnson holds the national record with a time of 9.93 seconds set in Japan in 2003. Kennedy, having gone under the 10-second mark on three occasions, most recently ran 9.98 seconds in Kenya last May and repeated 9.96 seconds at the national senior championships in Sydney last week.

With anticipation building, all eyes will be on Gout as he prepares to make his mark in the final. More updates are expected to come as he chases his sprinting dream.
