A chaotic night unfolded in Sydney’s suburbs, resulting in injuries to two police officers during separate incidents. Riot police were on patrol in Punchbowl around 8:40 PM when they noticed a Toyota CHR, allegedly stolen from Riverwood. As the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Juno Parade and Punchbowl Road, an officer attempted to apprehend the driver. However, the driver accelerated, trapping the officer between the Toyota and another vehicle. In response, the officer discharged his firearm, hitting the vehicle as it sped away. The injured officer, a 39-year-old man, sustained injuries to his lower leg and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Shortly after, at approximately 9:15 PM, police responded to reports of an injured man on Thorn Street, Ryde. The officers discovered the abandoned Toyota on Richard Johnson Crescent, along with a 32-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound in the yard of a nearby home. He was also taken to hospital and remains under police supervision.
Later that night, around 11:30 PM, a public shooting occurred on Campbell Road in Chester Hill, where several shots were reportedly fired from a black ute at another vehicle. Both cars fled the scene before the police arrived. Following this, police learned that a 26-year-old man had entered Auburn Hospital with gunshot wounds. Officers located a Mercedes in the hospital car park, riddled with bullet holes.
During their attempt to question the injured man in the emergency department, a 30-year-old individual allegedly attacked a 58-year-old chief inspector, striking him repeatedly. This assaults led to the man’s arrest for assaulting police, and he has been refused bail, set to appear in court shortly. The injured officer received treatment for a head laceration, while the 26-year-old remains in a critical condition.
Investigations into these incidents continue, and police encourage anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or via their online platform.
