Cassandra Eagling, a single mother of four from Tasmania, is speaking out against rising prices in Australia’s charity sector as the cost-of-living crisis intensifies. She argues that op shops, once a reliable source for affordable necessities, have become too expensive for those who need them the most. Many Australians have echoed her concerns, citing “unrealistic” pricing at stores like Vinnies and Salvos, which, according to Eagling, is especially alarming given the current economic pressures from escalating fuel and housing costs.

Despite not relying on op shops personally, as she’s been fortunate to receive donations of clothes, Eagling has always supported these stores through donations. She believes that access to quality second-hand items is essential, particularly for families struggling financially. Recently, she discovered the extent of the issue during a shopping trip, expressing her disbelief at the prices for basic items. For instance, she noted Kmart jackets priced at $35 in a Vinnies store, a cost she feels is prohibitive for families dependent on Centrelink support.

In her frustration, Eagling has reached out to Vinnies and Salvos, challenging their pricing strategies and highlighting the disconnect between their stated mission and the realities faced by many Australians. After her initial complaints received widespread attention online, she learned that similar concerns were being raised across Australia, New Zealand, and even the UK.

Although Vinnies has outlined its pricing policies, stating that prices are based on an item’s condition and original retail price, Eagling is pressing for a clearer understanding of what constitutes “affordable” in the context of second-hand goods. She argues that many community members feel the current pricing fails to reflect their needs and calls for transparent guidelines regarding cost in these stores.

In response to her advocacy, Eagling has launched a petition seeking to keep op shops affordable. The petition has quickly gained support, with over 1,000 signatures. Eagling is calling for greater accountability from charity shops, transparency in pricing definitions, and consistent guidelines for essential items to ensure that those in need can access affordable goods.

Her efforts aim not only to address pricing issues but also to question whether op shops are still effectively supporting the vulnerable populations they were intended to help. Eagling hopes her initiative will spur meaningful changes within the charity sector while highlighting the importance of keeping these stores accessible for all Australians.
