The daughter of an 87-year-old bushwalker, who was lost overnight in the chilly bushland of south-west Western Australia, is sharing her story in the hopes of raising awareness. The elderly woman embarked on a hike near Donnelly River Village, about 280 kilometres south of Perth, but unfortunately veered off the correct path.

Jo, her daughter, described her mother as determined and adventurous, noting that she had recently undergone hip replacements and was eager to go on the walk. However, after dark, as temperatures dropped to a chilly 6 degrees Celsius, Jo began to worry deeply about her mother’s safety, fearing she might never see her again.

The alarm was raised at 8pm on Friday after the bushwalker did not return as expected. Family and emergency services initiated an extensive search, deploying helicopters and drones to scan the area. Despite their efforts, the dense canopy made it difficult to locate her. Jo recounted that they searched tirelessly throughout the night, checking all the biking and walking trails without success.

Miraculously, the bushwalker was discovered the next day, 2 kilometres from her starting point. Though she was dehydrated and exhausted, she was otherwise unharmed. Remarkably, her mobile phone had managed to contact emergency services, aiding in her rescue. Jo described finding her mother sitting on a jarrah log, calmly eating a packet of raisins while waiting for help.

In light of this incident, authorities have issued warnings about the increasing number of hikers venturing into remote areas without proper preparation, which has led to a rise in rescue operations. Experts advise hikers to inform loved ones about their plans, and also recommend carrying extra water, food, clothing, and even a small shelter, noting that what may appear to be a short trek could unexpectedly extend into an overnight stay.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of preparedness in outdoor activities.
