In a notable statement ahead of this year’s State of Origin series, Queensland legend Sam Thaiday has advocated for the inclusion of North Queensland Cowboys standout Tom Chester in the Maroons’ squad. Thaiday, who boasts an impressive history with the Maroons, having played in 29 matches and contributing to eight consecutive series victories, shared his thoughts during an appearance on Wide World Of Sports’ program QLDER.

Thaiday expressed admiration for Chester’s recent performances, particularly in a match against the Brisbane Broncos, stating, "I believe Tom Chester will be involved in Queensland’s State of Origin squad this year." He praised Chester’s proficiency as a centre, acknowledging the presence of current incumbents Robert Toia and Gehamat Shibasaki but emphasised Chester’s significant contributions on the field.

Chester, a highly regarded talent who debuted in 2022, faced a challenging period due to injuries, including severe ACL issues that restricted him to a limited number of games. However, his return to form has been remarkable, with impressive statistics boasting four line breaks and two tries in just five appearances this season, as well as averaging 184 run metres per game. His defensive capabilities are equally commendable, having made 80 tackles while missing only nine, showcasing his readiness for high-pressure situations.

With the Maroons lacking depth in the centre position, Chester’s versatility across the backline could work in his favour as selectors look for fresh talent. Thaiday reiterated his belief that Chester is on the brink of receiving a call-up from coach Billy Slater, particularly due to the limited options available.

While Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is expected to secure one centre position, the second spot remains uncertain, with strong contenders like Toia, Shibasaki, AJ Brimson, and Jaxon Purdue vying for inclusion. Chester’s dynamic skill set may present him as a valuable asset for the team’s strategy, possibly securing a spot on the six-man bench.

The anticipation builds as the series is set to commence on Wednesday, May 27, at Accor Stadium, with fans eager to see if Chester’s promising form earns him a place in the much-celebrated Maroons lineup.
