Moana Pasifika has announced that the 2026 Super Rugby season will be its final one, following five years of participation in the competition. In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, the Auckland-based club expressed the challenges that led to its decision to disband, highlighting the ambition to hold regular home matches in Samoa and Tonga, which unfortunately did not come to fruition.

Kiki Maoate, the chair of Moana Pasifika, described the decision as one of the toughest the club has faced, expressing immense pride in the players, staff, and the community that has rallied around the team throughout its journey. Maoate underscored the club’s commitment to developing Pacific talent through its various rugby and community programmes, noting that this will continue even after the club’s closure. He also emphasised the importance of a smooth transition for all involved and the desire to finish the current season strongly.

The club has had to navigate significant setbacks, including the loss of star captain Ardie Savea to Japan and coach Tana Umaga’s impending move to join the All Blacks after the 2026 season. Maoate encouraged the club’s supporters to remain loyal during this challenging period, recognising the community’s vital role in supporting the team through both triumphs and tribulations.

Moana Pasifika’s narrative reflects resilience, embodying the spirit of the Pacific people, despite the disappointment of disbanding. As the team prepares for its last matches, there is a focus on providing support to players and staff for the remainder of the season, ensuring their well-being during this transition.

Looking ahead, Super Rugby will likely comprise ten teams in the coming season, including five from New Zealand, four from Australia, and Fijian Drua. Moana Pasifika is set to face off against the NSW Waratahs on Friday, with notable events expected, including an appearance by Prince Harry at Allianz Stadium.
