On January 24, police were dispatched to a short-term rental property in Belle Vista, Keilor East, after a cleaner reported discovering a concerning array of items, including explosives, firearms, around $1 million in cash, and a significant quantity of drugs. Authorities suspect that these items may be connected to organised crime.
The Bomb Response Unit promptly arrived at the scene and safely disposed of several incendiary devices found on the premises. Investigators learned that the property had been rented for several weeks in January, and noted a white Toyota Camry hire car that was repeatedly seen near the property during this time.
CCTV footage captured a man refuelling the Camry at a petrol station on Western Ring Road in Ardeer South on December 25. The police are keen to identify this individual and have encouraged anyone who recognises him to come forward. The Toyota Camry in question was seized by officers on January 24 and returned to the rental company.
Officials clarified that the man seen on the CCTV footage is not the individual who hired the vehicle. That person has already been questioned but has not been forthcoming with information. Detective Inspector Jamie Walker from the Major Drug Squad remarked, “This was no ordinary drug and cash seizure; it involved incendiary devices and numerous firearms, clearly indicating organised crime activity.”
Detective Walker urged the public to assist the investigation by revealing any information they might have. He stated emphatically, “We will pursue those responsible and ensure they face justice. It is in the best interest of anyone with information to come forward now.”
Anyone with knowledge regarding the man in the CCTV footage or any details related to the confiscated items is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
