Andrew Johns has suggested that the St George Illawarra Dragons should not be overly concerned about Jaydn Su’A’s decision to leave the club at the end of the season. The Origin representative and second-rower had the option to extend his contract until 2027 but opted to depart following the club’s troubling performances. Reports indicate that Su’A is poised to join the Parramatta Eels, marking a new phase in coach Jason Ryles’ plan to rebuild the team’s roster.
Dragons CEO Tim Watsford acknowledged Su’A’s contributions during his time with the club, expressing gratitude and wishing him well for the future.
Despite Su’A’s exit coinciding with the Dragons’ ongoing struggles, which have seen them lose ten consecutive matches, Johns believes the team has ample promising young forwards coming through the ranks, alleviating the potential impact of losing a key player like Su’A. He mentioned that while Su’A has been a significant asset, the emergence of local juniors could fill the gap left in the forward pack, especially if he was not an elite half.
Additionally, former player Billy Slater highlighted the influence of coach Jason Ryles on the development of players at Parramatta, which might have played a role in Su’A’s decision. Ryles has successfully improved back-rowers like Kelma Tuilagi and Kitione Kautoga since taking the helm at the Eels.
Su’A joined the Dragons in 2022 and has made 76 appearances for the club, earning the 2024 Dragons Medal as player of the year. His friendship with former South Sydney teammate Keaon Koloamatangi, who is reportedly joining the Dragons, could also have influenced his decision to move.
Despite a recent retention freeze at the club, Su’A’s situation remained unaffected due to his contractual options. The Dragons are currently facing scrutiny, with discussions about coach Shane Flanagan’s future becoming increasingly prominent amidst poor performances. The club’s management is set to convene to evaluate the team’s trajectory moving forward.
