Craig Bellamy expressed his frustration with the Melbourne Storm’s performance following a disheartening 38-12 loss to the Warriors. The defeat marked the Storm’s fourth consecutive loss, coming on the heels of a tough matchup against Penrith where they conceded 50 points. Bellamy reflected on the team’s defensive struggles, which saw them miss 32 tackles during the game—an unusually high number for a club known for its defensive strength.

In his post-match comments, Bellamy wryly noted that their week of defensive practice might as well have been spent at the pub, highlighting the ineffectiveness of their preparations. The Storm’s current position is precarious, sitting 13th on the ladder after six matches, with the potential of dropping to 14th if the Eels secure a win against the Titans.

While acknowledging the players’ role in the troubling performance, Bellamy also recognised the need for introspection among the coaching staff. He suggested that the team’s routine and preparation may require reassessment, given that their strategies have been largely unchanged over the past few years. “There are many aspects that need looking at, not just the players,” he stated, urging a review of how the coaching staff approaches their preparation.

Statistics from the match reveal a concerning picture beyond missed tackles: the Storm managed just 78% completion on their sets and made ten errors, juxtaposed with the Warriors’ 90% completion. In addition, they gave away seven ruck infringements, further compounding their issues. Team captain Harry Grant described some of these mistakes as “dumb and avoidable,” reflecting a broader concern about discipline and performance consistency.

As they move forward, the Storm will need to tighten their game, as Grant emphasised the importance of addressing errors and being more resilient in defence. Facing the need for improvement, the team hopes to find a solution to their recent woes and begin turning their season around.
