The Australian federal government is launching a $20 million initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to save fuel as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to impact petrol prices and supply. This campaign, named “Every little bit helps,” will focus on prompting Australians to rethink their driving habits, utilise public transport, and implement strategies for better fuel efficiency.

Drivers are encouraged to limit car usage, adopt smoother driving techniques, reduce the weight of their vehicles, and consider walking or taking public transport instead of driving. Information on these tips will be disseminated through various channels, including television, online platforms, and outdoor advertisements such as billboards and bus stations.

Set to officially launch nationwide tomorrow, this initiative follows a high-level national cabinet meeting convened to address the prevailing fuel crisis. Infrastructure Minister Catherine King stated that these recommendations are crucial for maintaining the mobility of essential services and workers. She emphasised the significance of every small effort in reducing fuel consumption to ensure vital services remain operational.

The Minister also mentioned that the rollout of this campaign is part of a broader National Fuel Security Plan designed to provide necessary information and updates regarding fuel availability.

This campaign comes as Australia enters the second phase of the “Keep Australia Moving” strategy, developed during national cabinet discussions. Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirmed that Australia’s fuel reserves are in a relatively stable condition, noting an increase in diesel stocks despite slight reductions in petrol and jet fuel reserves. Currently, Australia maintains 38 days of petrol supply, 31 days of diesel, and 28 days of jet fuel in reserve.

Additionally, the campaign’s launch coincides with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent visit to Singapore, where he secured an assurance from his counterpart, Lawrence Wong, to continue supplying Australia with approximately 55 per cent of its petrol needs.

Overall, this concerted effort seeks to foster community engagement in mitigating the impacts of the fuel crisis while securing the nation’s fuel supply for essential operations.
