A rescue operation successfully freed a stranded humpback whale, affectionately known as Timmy, from shallow waters near Germany. The whale, initially spotted close to the Baltic Sea coast on 3 March, had wandered far from its typical Atlantic habitat. Its condition worsened after becoming repeatedly trapped in the shallow waters near Wismar, prompting an extensive series of unsuccessful attempts to guide it to deeper seas, which attracted global attention through livestream broadcasts.

In response to Timmy’s plight, the environment minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania permitted a private initiative to attempt a rescue, despite scientific concerns regarding the whale’s ability to cope with the process. On a local Saturday morning, Timmy was successfully released approximately 70 kilometres from Skagen, Denmark. Witnesses reported seeing the whale swimming and blowing water post-release, though confirmation that it was indeed Timmy remained unverified initially.

There was considerable debate about whether it would be better to allow Timmy to perish peacefully or assist in its return to its natural environment. Protests advocating for the whale’s freedom were staged on the beaches of Wismar, while some activist discussions focused on potential transport methods for the creature. Experts speculated that the whale sought shallower waters out of exhaustion, while veterinarians on the private rescue team deemed it fit for transportation.

Prior to the release, a GPS transmitter was affixed to Timmy to track its movements. There remains uncertainty regarding how the whale ended up in the Baltic Sea; some believe it may have followed a shoal of herring or lost its way during migration.

During its time in the shallows, Timmy exhibited signs of distress, displaying irregular breathing and minimal activity. The whale also developed a skin condition, thought to be due to the lower salt levels of the Baltic environment, which required treatment with zinc ointment. The overwhelming public interest in Timmy’s situation was highlighted by continuous news updates and livestreams detailing every development pertaining to the whale’s health and rescue efforts.
