One of the highlights of Anzac Day in Australia is the opportunity for locals to participate in the traditional game of two-up. This unique betting game, which is only permitted on April 25 after midday, attracts crowds eager to join in the festivities. As evidenced by numerous social media posts, Australians are enthusiastically heading to pubs, with record turnouts reported across various venues.

In Paddington, Sydney, the London pub hosted its first-ever street party for Anzac Day, drawing massive queues of eager participants by early morning. Similarly, the Clovelly Hotel witnessed long lines of patrons ready to engage in the day’s events. Two-up involves a spinner who tosses two coins, with onlookers betting on the outcomes, which can be two heads, two tails, or a mix (referred to as “odds”).

While the basic rules involve betting on heads or tails, some venues also permit bets on odds. The spinner must ensure the coins are thrown high enough—at least three metres—into a designated ring, with an overseer, known as the “boxer,” managing bets and enforcing the rules. The game promotes a lively atmosphere, with participants, or “school,” playing in groups while wagering varying amounts, typically around $5 to $20, although some may opt for higher bets.

Central to the celebration is the wooden paddle, known as the “kip,” used for tossing the coins, which are vintage pennies dated before 1939. As participants enjoy their drinks and the camaraderie of the game, it serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who fought for Australia, providing a day of both remembrance and enjoyment. Overall, Anzac Day not only commemorates the nation’s history but also fosters a spirit of community through the age-old tradition of two-up.
