On Anzac Day, the Reservoir RSL sub-branch in Victoria was vandalised with offensive graffiti that expressed anti-veteran and anti-defence force sentiments. This incident occurred overnight, marking one of Australia’s most significant national days.
A representative from the sub-branch denounced the vandalism as “disgraceful” but commended the veterans, active service members, and their families for uniting in solidarity against the act. The spokesperson described how hateful messages were sprayed on various external walls of the building, aiming to inflict emotional distress and division within the community gathered to honour those who served.
Targeting a veterans’ organisation on such a meaningful day was viewed as a deliberate attempt to provoke hurt, but the response from the community was overwhelmingly supportive. Attendees, while understandably upset upon encountering the graffiti during the traditional Gunfire Breakfast, rallied together to express their condemnation of the offenders and their actions.
The incident was seen as an attack on the ideals celebrated on Anzac Day, yet the community demonstrated resilience and solidarity, reinforcing their collective commitment to honouring sacrifice and service. The police have been notified regarding this unsettling act of vandalism.
