A spectator was ejected from Kogarah Oval during the Dragons versus Storm match on Saturday after reportedly directing a homophobic insult at referee Peter Gough during half-time. As Gough made his way off the field, he paused to identify the individual to security staff, who promptly removed the fan from the premises.

A club representative, who chose to remain anonymous, verified the incident to Wide World of Sports, expressing surprise as the individual was a long-time supporter of the Dragons, regularly attending matches over the years. The official recounted that the spectator yelled, “Gough, you are a f—ing cheating [redacted homophobic slur],” prompting Gough to halt and address the fan directly before involving security.

The swift response from security showcased a commitment to maintaining a respectful atmosphere at the event. It’s expected that St George Illawarra will report the matter to the NRL Integrity Unit on Monday for further investigation. The club has been approached for additional comments regarding the incident.

This event highlights ongoing concerns regarding abusive behaviour in sports settings, particularly targeting officials, and underscores the importance of both players and fans fostering a respectful environment.
