Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy for global partnerships and a close associate of Donald Trump, recently revealed his aspirations for the Italian national football team, the Azzurri, to participate in an upcoming US-hosted tournament. In an interview with the Financial Times, he expressed, "As an Italian, it would be a dream to see the Azzurri competing." Zampolli highlighted Italy’s impressive legacy in football, boasting four World Cup titles, which he believes justifies their inclusion in such prestigious events.

Despite Zampolli’s enthusiasm, Italy is currently absent from the tournament after failing to qualify through the playoffs. He believes that their admission could foster better relations between Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Zampolli’s connections also extend to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, with whom he has discussed this idea.

In contrast, Infantino has been vocal in support of Iran’s participation, noting their recent qualification. He emphasised the importance of sports transcending political barriers and acknowledged the desire of the Iranian players to compete. Despite his support for Iranian participation, Infantino has expressed concerns for their safety in light of the political climate.

Zampolli’s influence in American political circles is notable, particularly given his history of assisting Melania Trump with her visa to the United States and introducing her to Trump himself. His connections, however, have not come without controversy. Allegations have surfaced regarding his involvement in the deportation of his ex-partner, Amanda Ungaro, which he reportedly instigated amidst a custody dispute over their son. This aspect of his life has garnered media attention and scrutiny.

As Zampolli makes his push for Italy’s inclusion in the World Cup, it’s clear that sports extend beyond the field, influencing diplomatic ties and personal relationships. Nonetheless, it’s essential to understand that participation decisions for the World Cup lie beyond the reach of political figures like the US president, regardless of personal affiliations. Football remains a powerful unifier, its impact felt across nations and cultures, as seen in the ongoing debate surrounding participant eligibility and the interplay between sport and politics.
