James Valentine, a beloved radio presenter and musician, has passed away at the age of 64 following a courageous battle with cancer. His contributions significantly impacted the lives of many in Sydney, where he was a familiar voice on 702 ABC Radio for over two decades, hosting the Afternoons program.

ABC’s chief executive Hugh Marks described Valentine as integral to “the rhythm of everyday life” for generations of listeners. His departure adds to the collective grief felt by those who appreciated his warmth, wit, and genuine nature, making him a well-respected figure in Australian media.

In 2024, Valentine announced he was stepping away from his programme to undergo treatment for oesophageal cancer, later revealing in February 2026 that he was retiring to focus on his health and family. Throughout his career, his style was characterised by fostering connection rather than confrontation, earning him praise for his thoughtful approach to broadcasting.

Colleague Richard Glover remarked on Valentine’s ability to uplift and connect with people, emphasising how his style encouraged listeners to appreciate the beauty of everyday life. Valentine started his media journey in the 1980s, initially presenting afternoon cartoons before transitioning to radio and eventually hosting his iconic afternoon show from 1999.

Beyond radio, he was a notable figure on television, contributing as a reviewer and commentator across various shows. He was also a talented musician, playing the saxophone alongside well-known Australian artists including Jo Camilleri, Kate Ceberano, and Wendy Matthews.

His impact on the community is profound, with many recalling how he brought joy and a sense of connection to the listeners through his long-standing career in media. His passing is a significant loss, not only to the broadcasting industry but to the multitude of fans and friends who admired him.
