Ajay Haridasse faced a heart-wrenching moment at the Boston Marathon when he collapsed just before crossing the finish line. As he struggled to rise, two fellow runners—Robson De Oliveira from Brazil and Aaron Beggs from Britain—came to his aid, hoisting him up and carrying him approximately 300 metres to the finish.
The dramatic incident unfolded during a challenging race, with numerous runners passing by. Observing the scene, spectator Pete Grasso captured the touching moment on video and noted how remarkable it was for De Oliveira and Beggs to pause in the midst of a fast-paced event to assist a fellow competitor. “It’s not easy to stop in such a race,” Grasso remarked in an email. “Their willingness to help another runner was simply inspiring, and the crowd’s enthusiastic support added to the emotional weight of the situation.”
In a parallel event, another runner, Lan Nguyen from Washington, D.C., found herself in distress just before the finish. She was supported by fellow competitors Jessica Kier, Meredith Rosenberg, and William Bara-Jimenez, who even carried her partway before she managed to scoot across the finish line.
The Boston Athletic Association, which orchestrated the marathon, voiced its admiration for the camaraderie displayed among athletes. They expressed pride in the running community’s readiness to assist those in need, not only at the celebrated finish line on Boylston Street but also throughout the entirety of the race. A staggering 29,101 out of 29,470 participants completed the marathon, illustrating not only the physical challenge of the event but also the compassionate spirit that characterises the running community.
This year’s Boston Marathon highlighted the profound sense of solidarity present among runners, especially on Patriots’ Day.
