The NRL season is in full swing, and attention is now shifting towards the upcoming State of Origin series, with Queensland and New South Wales set to announce their squads soon. As the series opener approaches on May 27 in Sydney, coaches Billy Slater for Queensland and Laurie Daley for NSW are faced with significant selection challenges.

The Blues have suffered a major setback with the injury of key player Payne Haas, sidelined for up to two months. Daley is considering several strong players to fill this void, expressing confidence in the available talent. With recent modifications to Origin eligibility rules, Addin Fonua-Blake has emerged as a viable candidate after being previously ineligible due to international commitments.

Other potential replacements for Haas include Jackson Ford from the Warriors, and Terrell May, who was overlooked last year but remains a contender. The Blues are also hoping for an exemption for Moses Leota, although opinions differ on this decision, particularly from Blues legend Andrew Johns.

Cameron Munster’s position as Queensland captain is under scrutiny due to his recent poor performance amidst Melbourne’s struggles, raising questions about his spot in the team for the opening game. Despite his form issues, Munster remains determined to improve before the series. In the event of inadequate performance, young halfback Sam Walker could be called upon, alongside Tom Dearden.

For NSW, James Tedesco’s resurgence has created a competitive dynamic with incumbent Dylan Edwards for the fullback position. Tedesco aims to reclaim his spot after being dropped previously, while Daley insists the final selection will be based purely on current form.

In Queensland, they are grappling with a fullback dilemma of their own, with Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga both recovering from injuries. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow stands as a promising alternative.

On the wing, the Blues are searching for a new player following Zac Lomax’s departure, eyeing options like Mark Nawaqanitawase and Thomas Jenkins. Meanwhile, Daley has hinted at the potential inclusion of rookie Ethan Strange from the Raiders, who is showing impressive form.

As the countdown to State of Origin continues, both coaches are tasked with making crucial decisions to maximise their teams’ chances in the fierce competition ahead.
