Dragons officials are in the midst of creating a ‘hit list’ of players whose contracts are ending as they seek to rejuvenate the team in light of a disappointing start to the 2026 season and the departure of coach Shane Flanagan. Reports indicate that the club is planning a significant roster overhaul, with 11 players out of contract, many of whom are unlikely to be retained.

Additionally, some high-value players contracted until 2027 will be given the opportunity to explore other options, which could free up significant space in the salary cap for new acquisitions. With the team suffering from 11 consecutive losses, it is clear that they need fresh talent urgently.

Among the players already leaving is Jaydn Su’A, who has signed with the Eels. Others like Damien Cook, Luciano Leilua, Tyrell Sloan, Blake Lawrie, and Christian Tuipulotu are also without deals for 2027. To begin addressing their needs, the Dragons have already secured Keaon Koloamatangi from Souths, adding depth to their forward pack. They are also close to signing Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater. However, the Dragons particularly lack creative playmakers in the halves, as the current partnership of Daniel Atkinson and Kyle Flanagan has struggled to deliver a potent attack this season.

While the market for halves is limited, four potential candidates could bolster the team if young Kade Reed does not resolve the issue. Notable options include Tanah Boyd and Chanel Harris-Tavita from the Warriors, both of whom are having strong seasons. Additionally, Jake Clifford from the Cowboys and the underrated Kodi Nikorima from the Dolphins are viable alternatives. Although the Dragons ideally want to finalise their coaching situation for 2027 before pursuing new signings, the pressing need for new talent means they may risk losing out on quality players if they wait too long.

In the Knights camp, promising hooker Harrison Graham is seeking a longer-term contract after being offered a one-year extension. At just 24, he has played five games this season, contributing to three wins, and is seen as a valuable asset. However, salary cap constraints due to substantial contracts with players like Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown may limit Newcastle’s ability to meet Graham’s demands.

In another development, Dolphins second-rower Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who has significantly improved this season, is being considered for a spot in the Queensland Origin team. His standout performances in an inconsistent Dolphins pack have garnered attention, particularly from Maroons’ selectors.

Lastly, the Raiders announced the signing of an exciting new player, 16-year-old Benji McNamara from the Queanbeyan Blues, who joins the club on a four-year deal. Renowned for his try-scoring ability, McNamara is expected to make a significant impact in the rugby league landscape.
