Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the controversial United States Secretary of Labour, has announced her resignation, marking her as the third woman to exit Donald Trump’s cabinet in recent months. President Trump confirmed that she will transition to a role in the private sector.

In his statement, Trump praised her efforts in safeguarding American workers and promoting fair labour practices, saying she had made significant contributions during her tenure. Following the announcement, Chavez-DeRemer expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve, referring to it as a “privilege” to work under what she described as the greatest president of her lifetime. She stated, “Even though my service is ending, my commitment to advocating for American workers will continue.”

Chavez-DeRemer’s time in office has been marred by multiple scandals, including allegations of inappropriate conduct involving her and her family. Reports from January indicated that she was under investigation for a range of misconduct, such as potentially having an affair with a subordinate, consuming alcohol while on duty, and misusing taxpayer funds for personal trips. Allegations surfaced that staff members were instructed to purchase alcohol for her and that she requested staff assistance in arranging “work trips” to events including UFC fights.

Further issues were reported regarding her family; her husband was reportedly banned from the Department of Labour’s headquarters after allegations of making unwanted advances towards female employees, and there were claims that personal messages were sent by both her husband and father to young staff members.

Chavez-DeRemer previously served as a Congressional representative before experiencing electoral defeat in 2024. Her departure signifies a notable shift within Trump’s administration, which has seen three cabinet members leave recently, all of whom have been succeeded by male counterparts, leaving only two women in the cabinet.

While Trump has remained silent on her resignation despite being active on social media, Chavez-DeRemer’s exit highlights ongoing controversies that have characterised her leadership.
