The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced the availability of over 16,000 job opportunities for field officers throughout major cities and regional areas in Australia, with a focus on preparing for the upcoming 2026 Census, scheduled for the night of August 11. These positions require no prior experience and offer a competitive wage of $31.19 per hour, along with superannuation benefits.

Emily Walter, the national spokesperson for the Census, emphasised the need for individuals across Australia to assist in ensuring that every person is counted. Responsibilities of field officers will include answering public inquiries about the Census, delivering census letters and forms, and following up with non-respondents to encourage participation. They will also provide assistance to those needing help completing the Census.

Candidates interested in these roles should possess strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to engage with the public in a sensitive and respectful manner. Additionally, effective organisational skills and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Remaining composed under pressure is also a key requirement; however, applicants do not need prior work experience to be considered.

Those selected will undergo paid online training prior to commencing work in July or early August. The ABS is also looking to fill various other Census-related roles, including field managers and mobile field representatives. This announcement is particularly beneficial for the approximately 3.38 million Australians who are currently unemployed or under-employed, as many are seeking job opportunities.

Census night is set to take place on a Tuesday, and the majority of households will have the option to complete the Census online. Importantly, this Census will introduce a new question regarding sexual orientation and gender identity for individuals aged 16 and over.

For those keen to stay updated on relevant news and exclusive stories, following the ABS across all platforms is encouraged.
