Usain Bolt, the legendary sprinter, has shared invaluable advice with emerging Australian talent Gout Gout, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people to maintain focus on athletics. Gout recently made headlines by breaking his own Australian record in the 200-metre sprint, clocking in at an impressive 19.67 seconds during the national athletics championships on 12 April. Bolt, who holds the world record of 19.19 seconds set in 2009, understands the challenges young athletes face, having experienced them himself.

In a conversation with CNN Sport, Bolt reminded the 18-year-old that distractions can arise all too often for young athletes, potentially pulling them away from their primary goal. He expressed hope that Gout has a supportive circle around him to help keep his focus on track and field, noting that success in athletics must be prioritised above all else.

Despite his recent achievements, Gout has decided to skip participating in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this year, opting instead to concentrate on the World Under-20 Championships immediately following the event in Eugene, Oregon, where he aims for gold in the 200-metre race. He is scheduled to make his debut in senior competition at the Diamond League on June 10 in Oslo, Norway, where he will face off against Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the reigning gold medallist from the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Bolt acknowledged that the transition to senior level athletics will be a significant adjustment for Gout. He recounted his own challenges stepping onto the circuit after high school, recalling a string of losses despite his initial confidence. Bolt warned Gout to expect an eye-opening experience that could either discourage him or galvanize him to work even harder. He stressed the potential learning opportunities in the first year of such competition, which are vital for growth and improvement.

The Jamaican sprinter also conveyed the reality that not every day will yield remarkable performances. With a keen eye on Gout’s potential, Bolt remarked, “He’s a massive young talent,” recognising the scrutiny young athletes face as they strive for greatness. He hopes that Gout has the right support system in place to navigate the ups and downs of competition, instilling a mindset that understands the variability of performance. Ultimately, Bolt’s counsel points towards resilience and focus as critical components for Gout’s success in the competitive world of athletics.
