Two adventurous dogs, Rupert and Finni, have been reunited following a remarkable five-week escapade in South Australia’s Murraylands, where they encountered challenging conditions and even sparred with kangaroos. The pair, known for their knack for wandering beyond their yard, spurred each other on during their escapades.

The situation took an unexpected turn in March when Ben Dunbar, the dogs’ owner, discovered of the tragic death of his neighbour, Chris Scanlon, which left him unable to respond to Ben’s calls, prompting concerns for the dogs’ whereabouts. After widespread searches and signs posted to locate the dogs proved unsuccessful, hope dwindled as time passed, until a social media lead pointed Ben towards a sparsely populated island on the River Murray.

Driven by determination, Ben conducted a final three-hour search by boat and on foot, during which he was overwhelmed with emotions when Rupert unexpectedly appeared. Both dogs were found, albeit in poor condition—starving and somewhat withdrawn. Finni bore evidence of what could only be described as “kangaroo warfare,” yet both were miraculously alive and home at last.

This incident highlighted the challenges in the area, where tracking devices are scarce and, in an unfortunate twist, Rupert had managed to lose two collars while on his journey. As he reflected on the unusual circumstances of the last five weeks—losing Chris and the distress of not knowing where his dogs were—Ben expressed feelings of emptiness but was relieved to have Rupert and Finni back.

With Chris’ passing, Finni will now stay with his son, Cody, who lives nearly 40 kilometres away in Mannum. However, the bond between Cody and Finni, which holds memories of happy times spent with Chris, ensures that distance will not sever their connection.

This extraordinary tale serves as a heartwarming reminder of the relationship between pets and their families, showcasing resilience and the joy of reunion.
