A Florida judge, Darrin Gayles, dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch, stating that Trump failed to convincingly demonstrate that an article published by Murdoch’s outlet contained actual malice. Gayles remarked that the complaint did not meet the legal standard required for such claims, highlighting that Trump, the DOJ, and the FBI had been given the opportunity to comment on the article, to which Trump had responded.

The lawsuit centred around an article that first appeared in The New York Post and was subsequently covered by various media outlets. It was connected to a controversial letter reportedly written by Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, which depicted a dialogue between “Donald” and “Jeffrey” and included a peculiar illustration. Despite Trump’s assertions to the Wall Street Journal that he neither authored the letter nor believed it existed, Congress’s House Oversight Committee later published the letter, countering his claims.

The case was dismissed without prejudice, allowing Trump the option to file an amended lawsuit by April 27. One of his lawyers indicated plans to do so, describing it as a promising case. This dismissal adds to the ongoing narrative of Trump’s numerous defamation suits against major media organisations, particularly during his presidency.

Notably, Trump’s interaction with Murdoch’s media has been significant throughout his career, with the mogul’s outlets, such as Fox News and the New York Post, often seen as instrumental to Trump’s rise in politics and business. The lawsuit against Murdoch represented a notable choice, given their longstanding relationship, which has included previous legal conflicts. Overall, the case underscores the complexities of media influence, public perception, and the ongoing legal battles of Trump.
