The St George Illawarra Dragons have faced yet another setback as Scott Drinkwater, the star fullback for the North Queensland Cowboys, has turned down their offer to join the club. The Dragons had prioritised securing Drinkwater for the 2027 season, but his manager, Gavin Orr, confirmed on Wide World of Sports that they had declined the proposal. Orr stated, “There are several clubs interested in Scott, and the Dragons’ bid did not meet our expectations at this stage,” implying that the club will need to improve their offer to remain in the running.

While the Dragons continue to seek a more competitive deal, the Perth Bears have expressed a willingness to offer Drinkwater more than St George Illawarra, alongside interest from several Sydney teams. With Drinkwater permitted by the Cowboys to explore his options, it appears that the club may not retain him for the upcoming season. The Cowboys are likely to transition young talent Jaxon Purdue into the fullback role after he recently signed a lucrative three-year extension.

The winless Dragons are in urgent need of a dynamic fullback, especially with veteran captain Clint Gutherson expected to shift positions next season. It’s anticipated that the club will return with an improved offer for Drinkwater in the near future.

In other news, Parramatta is hoping for a morale boost as they prepare to face the Bulldogs, marking the 40th anniversary of their last premiership victory against them. Legends from that iconic team, including Ray Price and Peter Sterling, will partake in Sunday’s celebration, potentially inspiring the current squad amidst their ongoing struggles.

Meanwhile, former Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen, who shocked the rugby league world with his retirement at just 27, is now eyeing a comeback—not in league or union but in touch football. The 2026 Clive Churchill Medal winner aims to make the NSW State Cup squad later this season.

Additionally, Adam Doyle, known for his recruitment efforts at the Newcastle Knights, has become a sought-after talent scout for next season. His contributions have played a significant role in the Knights’ resurgence, bringing in players such as Fletcher Hunt and Jermaine McEwen. Despite his recent departure from the Knights, Doyle’s reputation in the rugby league community remains strong.
