Ted Turner, the audacious television pioneer known for founding CNN and revolutionising news broadcasting with the introduction of the 24-hour cable news cycle, passed away at the age of 87. His death was confirmed by Turner Enterprises, which oversees his extensive business empire.

Turner’s influence extended beyond media; he owned professional sports teams in Atlanta and vast areas of land across the American West. He also made headlines as a yacht racer, leading his team to victory in the America’s Cup in 1977. Throughout his life, Turner was a significant philanthropist, donating a staggering $1 billion to United Nations charities and contributing to conservation initiatives on his sprawling ranches.

Married three times, including a notable union with actress Jane Fonda, he earned monikers like “Captain Outrageous” and “the Mouth of the South” for his candid personality. In later years, Turner dealt with Lewy body dementia, retreating from the television industry to focus on philanthropy and his extensive land holdings, which included the largest bison herd in the U.S.

Turner’s entrepreneurial journey began when he transformed his father’s billboard business into a global media conglomerate. He launched CNN in 1980, a groundbreaking venture that gave viewers access to news whenever they wanted. His innovative approach was driven by a personal frustration with the timing of traditional news broadcasts. CNN’s defining moment came during the Gulf War in 1991, where it provided live coverage from the frontline, establishing its reputation as a reliable news source.

Despite selling Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner in 1996 for $7.3 billion, he gradually found himself sidelined from the company. Reflecting on his later regrets, Turner admitted losing control of his creation was a mistake.

Born on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Turner experienced early setbacks in his academic life but rose to prominence by taking over his father’s company after the latter’s suicide. His bold investments included acquiring the MGM film library, augmenting his network’s offerings with a treasure trove of classic films and leading to the establishment of Turner Classic Movies and the Cartoon Network.

Turner was a vibrant, larger-than-life figure, known not only for his business acumen but also for his sometimes controversial remarks and antics. His legacy includes his commitment to environmental causes, the promotion of world peace, and his role in American philanthropy. Notably, he co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative to combat global nuclear threats.

Through significant market fluctuations and personal trials, Turner remained dedicated to his vision of using his resources for greater good, illustrating a life fuelled by adventure rather than mere profit. His parting words reflect a blend of humour and profound insight: “Life is more an adventure than a quest to make money.” Ted Turner’s passing marks the end of an era for the media landscape and the philanthropic initiatives he championed.
