The anticipation for the inaugural NFL game in Australia, scheduled for September 11, is palpable, with a staggering 90,000 fans vying for tickets during a pre-sale event set for Wednesday. The game, featuring the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is expected to sell out its 100,000 seats rapidly. General public ticket sales won’t commence until April 8, yet the early demand indicates a fervent interest among fans.

However, many have voiced their concerns online about both the ticketing process and the steep prices. Reports suggest level one seats could be priced at $780, while the last row of level four will cost $450. Premium options, including an AFL dining package for $2,250 per ticket, have sparked frustration among fans who feel these prices are exorbitant.

By mid-March, over 150,000 fans had registered interest in attending, contributing to the overwhelming turnout for the pre-sale, which experienced a high volume of demand, nearly selling out by 10:30 am AEDT. Despite taking place on a Friday morning—an atypical time for such events—the match is anticipated to attract a full crowd, assuming ticket prices don’t deter potential attendees.

The hype surrounding the game has not been matched by enthusiasm from the teams involved. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has expressed scepticism regarding the benefits of playing abroad and indicated frustration over the logistical challenges posed by the lengthy flight and its effect on the team. He remarked that while expanding the league’s international presence is commendable, the specific benefits for the team are minimal.

In contrast, general manager John Lynch adopted a more diplomatic stance, recognising the demands placed on high-profile teams. He acknowledged the significance of their exposure but emphasised the importance of adapting and making the most of the situation they find themselves in.

Notably, a separate pre-sale event for Rams fans was also conducted. The MCG has confirmed that ticketing for the game is being managed by the NFL, and inquiries regarding the exceptional pre-sale demand have been directed to NFL Australia.

As the date approaches, both the excitement and challenges arising from ticket sales and the teams’ travel logistics highlight the complexities of hosting such a prominent international sporting event in Australia.
