A pro-Palestine forum planned for Sydney, titled “Why is it right to say Globalise the Intifada,” has been cancelled by Lord Mayor Clover Moore. Scheduled to occur at the East Sydney Community Arts Centre, the event faced abrupt cancellation amid concerns it might incite unrest, particularly given the current climate in Sydney.
Moore directed the city’s chief executive to annul the event at the last minute, citing fears of escalating tensions. In her statement, she expressed her commitment to the principles of peaceful assembly and free speech but emphasised that these must be weighed against the public’s safety and community respect.
The Lord Mayor noted that recent media coverage, particularly from the Murdoch press, had fostered division surrounding the event, heightening community tensions just as a Royal Commission into Antisemitism begins. She condemned the media for simplifying complex issues and calling for communities to take polarized stances. Moore affirmed her prior participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, while acknowledging that ongoing violence in the Middle East has exacerbated fears and discrimination against various groups, including rises in antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian sentiments.
Moore highlighted the traumatic impact of the geopolitical situation on local communities and clarified that protesting against war does not equate to a lack of sympathy for Jewish communities. The controversy surrounding pro-Palestinian protests in Sydney has intensified, particularly following heightened police presence and the introduction of temporary laws limiting protest activities which were later deemed unconstitutional.
The cancellation of the forum reflects the ongoing sensitivities and complexities of the discussion around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, underscoring the challenges faced when balancing activism, community safety, and the right to free expression in diverse societies like Sydney.
