A dedicated police initiative has been launched to confront serious and organised crime syndicates associated with a surge in violent incidents targeting nightlife venues in Melbourne. Between April 14 and 27, the city witnessed 15 incidents of arson and shootings across hospitality locations in the CBD, South Melbourne, and Prahran. Additionally, investigators have linked two kidnappings to these events.
Detective Superintendent Jason Kelly highlighted that while most of the offenses have involved arson, there have also been reported discharges of firearms and kidnappings. He expressed concerns over the significant danger these actions pose to the community. In response, Victoria Police has initiated Operation Eclipse, aimed at uncovering the motives behind the attacks and identifying those responsible. “We are keeping an open mind regarding the underlying reasons, and everything is being considered,” Kelly stated.
Special attention has been given to specific venues that have been targeted, although police confirmed that none received prior extortion demands. To date, twelve individuals have been arrested, primarily young gang members who communicated their strategies through encrypted applications. Two 16-year-olds have been charged after a failed firebombing attempt at Leftbank in Southbank, with police disclosing incriminating messages exchanged via Signal about the attack.
Investigation findings indicate that perpetrators might be compensated ranging from $500 to as high as $20,000 for their involvement in these crimes. Authorities are particularly focused on the unlawful trade of spirits, especially following a suspicious fire at a factory in Keysborough, raising concerns about potential tax evasion or smuggling of alcoholic beverages.
The police have drawn parallels to the recent clashes in Melbourne’s illicit tobacco market, citing the use of arson as a method of intimidation. Kelly noted that the tactics seen in these operations echo those of the ongoing tobacco wars, suggesting a wider pattern of organised crime activity.
In summary, Operation Eclipse has been set forth to address and dismantle the syndicates behind the alarming events in Melbourne’s nightlife, with a robust effort to investigate all aspects linked to these violent acts. The approach includes thorough examinations of potential connections to illegal activities, particularly in the alcohol sector, while prioritising community safety and striving to bring perpetrators to justice.
