Study Reveals Women Starting Pill After Childbirth Face Higher Risk of Postnatal Depression

A recent study from Copenhagen University Hospital-Rigshospitalet in Denmark has revealed a concerning link between hormonal contraceptive pills and postnatal depression in first-time mothers. Researchers examined data from over 600,000 women and found that those who began using hormonal contraceptives within the first year after childbirth faced a nearly 1.5 times higher risk of depression compared to those who did not use such methods.

Interestingly, the timing of when a mother starts using hormonal birth control plays a significant role, with those beginning treatment earlier experiencing an even greater risk of developing depressive symptoms. The correlation was noted across most hormonal contraceptive types, although the progestogen-only pill was an exception; it appeared to lower depression risk in the initial months but showed a heightened risk later on.

During the 12-month observation period, more than 9,250 mothers were diagnosed with depression, which, while representing a relatively small percentage (1.5%) of the total participants, suggests a noteworthy association between hormonal contraceptives and postnatal depression.

Postnatal depression itself is a serious mental health issue, characterised by emotional and behavioural changes that persist beyond two weeks. Symptoms often include low mood, anxiety, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, and fatigue, affecting the well-being of new mothers.

For those who may be struggling, support services such as Lifeline (13 11 14), beyondblue (1300 22 4636), or PANDA (1300 726 306) are available for help.
