A Sydney service station created a stir this afternoon as fuel prices plummeted to an astonishing 78¢ per litre, driving many locals to fill up their tanks. The Metro Petroleum station in Blacktown saw the formation of lengthy queues, prompting police involvement to manage the growing crowd.

This remarkable price drop is the lowest residents have encountered in decades; however, it is not expected to last. The temporary cut is attributed to a generous gesture from Matthew Camenzuli, a former federal candidate. Camenzuli stated it felt “fantastic” to utilise a portion of government funding he received, amounting to $10,000 for garnering 4 per cent of the vote, in a manner beneficial to the local community rather than lining his own pockets.

Camenzuli declared, “I don’t want taxpayers’ money,” highlighting his intent to pass the savings directly to drivers. He confirmed that the promotional price would hold until the funding ran out. News of the cut quickly spread, with many declaring it the lowest fuel price they had encountered in 20 years.

Despite this celebratory moment, rising oil prices amidst ongoing conflicts in Iran indicate that fuel costs are likely to increase again soon. Following a frenzy that lasted approximately three hours, Camenzuli’s initiative was exhausted, leaving him uncertain about whether he would run in the next federal election. However, he acknowledged that the gesture might have won him some support among voters.

As the day unfolded, it became clear that while the fuel price drop provided a rare moment of relief for Sydney drivers, the unpredictability of global oil prices suggests such opportunities could be fleeting.
