Residents in Perth’s south east are seeking clarification regarding their exposure to hazardous chemicals after a fire at a lithium battery recycling facility in Maddington. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, triggered an ongoing hazmat alert for the locality.

Local resident Katrina Kettley expressed concerns about the unknown chemicals and potential consequences of the fire, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the situation. “They don’t know the chemicals… the extent of the fire,” she told 9News, underscoring the anxiety felt within the community.

Another resident voiced frustration, stating that despite the emerging risks associated with new products, better control measures should have been implemented to prevent such incidents. Instead, many residents are left suffering without clear guidance. “People are suffering now, and people are being told just to go to the GP. What do we tell the doctor to test us for?” they lamented.

While the Health Department has indicated that, based on current assessments, significant health issues are not anticipated, residents are urged to stay indoors and keep windows shut if they notice any symptoms. The mixed messages have left the local community on edge, complicating their path to adequate support and information.

As residents grapple with these distressing circumstances, they continue to demand answers and assurance regarding their health and safety in light of this unfortunate incident.
