The soldiers of Germany’s vast Army Group B were under the impression that they were completely surrounded during a critical moment in World War II. Unbeknownst to them, however, there existed a 24-kilometre escape route through the mountains that would have allowed them to retreat and continue fighting. The key to this misinformation lay in their misplaced trust in their own intelligence, and particularly in a German-language radio station they had been tuning into for several months.

This station, known as Operation Annie, was not what it seemed. Broadcasting from Luxembourg, it gained credibility by broadcasting German folk and classical music along with seemingly accurate news about the war, thus building a loyal audience among German troops. Its broadcasts, which were more moderate than the usual Nazi propaganda, contributed to the station’s following, creating a false sense of security among the troops.

As the Allied forces advanced, they encircled around 370,000 German soldiers early in the month. Sensing a potential escape route through a minor breach in the Allied lines, Operation Annie shifted its programming to mislead German soldiers about the retreat options. The station’s broadcasts erroneously directed parts of Army Group B towards a specific area, ultimately leading them into a well-prepared American defensive position instead of the genuine gap that could have facilitated their escape.

As a result of this manipulation, the soldiers, believing they had a safe passage, found themselves in a perilous situation where retreat was impossible. Shortly thereafter, the German Army surrendered en masse, with around 300,000 troops capitulating in the Ruhr pocket—a testament to the devastating effectiveness of Operation Annie’s deceptive broadcasts.

This pivotal moment highlights not only the psychological dimensions of warfare but also the critical role of misinformation, illustrating how it can alter the course of events and lead to significant military consequences.
