Vigils Across Australia Honour Kumanjayi Little Baby
A nationwide wave of vigils is taking place across Australia tonight to pay tribute to five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose tragic death has shocked communities far and wide. Her body was discovered in the Northern Territory after an extensive five-day search, during which she was reportedly abducted and murdered by 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis.
The loss has deeply affected the Alice Springs community, which has rallied to support Kumanjayi’s family during this devastating time. A significant gathering at Anzac Oval saw locals come together for a sunset vigil, expressing their grief and solidarity. Similar gatherings are happening in major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, and Canberra, extending to smaller regional centres as well.
Attendees of the vigils were encouraged to wear pink, Kumanjayi’s favourite colour, as they brought flowers, toys, cards, and candles to honour her memory. Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill noted the vigils serve as a vital space for the community to collectively process their grief and extend their support to Kumanjayi’s family.
Mayor Hill emphasised the importance of coming together: "Let’s embrace our grieving community and express our care and solidarity with Kumanjayi Little Baby’s family." She also took a moment to commend the emergency services and local authorities for their dedicated efforts during the search.
As these vigils unfold, the community’s response exemplifies a powerful collective mourning and a commitment to honouring the life of a young girl whose future was tragically cut short.
