A 54-year-old man in Melbourne, identified only as Marty, has reported an unprovoked attack while returning home after a night out. The incident occurred as he was cycling across the Evan Walker Bridge towards Flinders Street Station when he was confronted by two young individuals who unexpectedly punched him in the jaw.
Marty described the sudden attack to 9News, stating, “They just walked up and punched me.” In the aftermath, he attempted to contact emergency services by calling Triple Zero, but the assailants returned, snatching his phone and tossing it into the Yarra River. He lamented the loss of irreplaceable photos of his late mother stored on the device.
Following the attack, Marty was hospitalised after sustaining injuries, including a knocked-out tooth and facial bruising. He recounted the horrifying experience, saying, “I felt my mouth, and my hand was just, yeah, there was a lot of blood coming out.” This incident has heightened his concern over the increasing violence in Melbourne’s Central Business District, which he believes is worsening. He expressed his frustration over the random nature of such crimes, stating, “It’s really wrong,” reflecting on his unsettling experience during what should have been an enjoyable night out.
Marty described his attackers as being in their late teens to early twenties, dressed in jeans and Hoodrich jumpers. As of now, police have yet to make any arrests, and the investigation remains active. Marty concluded with a plea for better behaviour from individuals engaging in such aggressive acts, saying, “They really need to get a life; they can’t go around doing that.”
