Rugby league agent Mat Rogers has delivered a critical assessment of the St George Illawarra Dragons, particularly regarding player Loko Pasifiki Tonga’s situation, which has led him to seek negotiations with other clubs. Rogers, although not directly managing the 20-year-old, is part of the team that represents him.
Pasifiki Tonga has yet to make his first-grade debut this season after appearing in ten matches last year. Rogers has suggested that the Dragons may not view him as being up to the required standard, stating that Pasifiki Tonga feels he isn’t receiving the support needed for his development. He expressed, “He’s a tremendous young man,” highlighting the player’s potential. In his return to the New South Wales Cup, Pasifiki Tonga recently demonstrated his abilities by running for 250 metres and scoring a try.
Rogers underscored the frustration faced by the young player, noting that he feels bewildered by the lack of coaching and guidance. “He’s totally flabbergasted with how he’s been treated,” he said, indicating that Pasifiki Tonga is unsure of his next steps amid this uncertainty. Additionally, Rogers pointed out that there’s a sense of urgency within the Dragons to focus on winning games, which may impede their willingness to negotiate Pasifiki Tonga’s release.
This situation reflects a broader concern as Pasifiki Tonga is not the only player seeking a change. Jaydn Su’A has also opted out of his player option for the next season, signalling potential upheaval within the team’s roster. Rogers mentioned that should Pasifiki Tonga be released, other clubs will likely show interest due to his impressive performances in the NSW Cup, where he has scored two tries in three matches.
Currently, the Dragons are performing well in the NSW Cup, positioned second and sharing points with the first-placed Knights, though with a game in hand. Nevertheless, the future for Pasifiki Tonga appears uncertain as he strives for a more substantial role in the team.
In summary, both Rogers and Pasifiki Tonga are looking for clarity and opportunity, suggesting a challenging atmosphere within the Dragons as they balance team performance with individual player development.
