A man has been charged following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in injuries to a cyclist in Melbourne’s Bayside area over the weekend.
On Saturday morning, at approximately 8am, 53-year-old Justin was cycling at the rear of a larger group on the Nepean Highway in Seaford when he was reportedly struck by a blue Volkswagen Golf. Eyewitness footage captured by a fellow cyclist revealed the moment of impact, showing Justin tumbling to the ground.
Despite the severity of the incident, Justin was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene. In an interview with 9News, he recounted the experience, stating that it felt like he had been struck by “a freight train.” He expressed utter shock at the collision, acknowledging how fortunate he was that the situation had not ended worse.
Authorities claim that the driver of the Volkswagen fled the scene following the collision. A 20-year-old man from Cranbourne North has since been arrested and faces multiple charges, including reckless conduct threatening life, dangerous driving, and failure to provide assistance. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at the Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on April 3.
