A Liberal candidate in northern Sydney has stirred controversy by distributing Easter eggs outside a local primary school during the federal election campaign. Scott Yung, the candidate for the Bennelong electorate, alongside his campaign team, handed out the treats to students outside Lane Cove Public School, prompting a formal complaint from the school’s principal.
The New South Wales Department of Education confirmed that the principal had raised concerns directly with the Liberal Party’s headquarters. A representative from the department stated, “It is unacceptable for any member of the public to hand out Easter Eggs, lollies or any other consumable to children outside a school,” highlighting the seriousness of the issue. The department is currently monitoring the situation.
The Liberal Party has yet to respond to inquiries from 9news.com.au regarding the incident. Bennelong is considered a crucial seat for the Coalition in the upcoming federal election, which would help them regain power. Currently, the seat is held by Labor’s Jerome Laxale, but it is notionally a Liberal seat following a redistribution. This constituency, once represented by former Prime Minister John Howard, has only been held by Labor for two terms in its history.
