A health alert has been issued for Perth following a confirmed measles case involving a traveller returning from abroad. This individual visited multiple venues in Perth between March 12 and March 17. Symptoms, such as fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough, and a red rash, typically manifest around 10 to 18 days post-exposure.

Specific locations visited include Chargrill Masters in Belmont on March 12, various places including Nova Medical Centre and Harvey Norman on March 13, Baby Steps Health Centre and Coles Subiaco on March 15, and Beeliar Medicare Urgent Care Clinic along with Desi Marketplace on March 16. Anyone who was at these sites during these times is urged to monitor for symptoms.

Measles poses serious health risks, especially for young children, potentially leading to complications like blindness, brain inflammation, and severe lung infections. Dr Thomas Murray has highlighted that measles can weaken the immune system, increasing the susceptibility to other infections.

Individuals who are fully vaccinated against measles have a significantly reduced likelihood of contracting it, although certain groups—such as the unvaccinated or those with weakened immune systems—face higher risks. Those exposed should consult their healthcare provider for further guidance. It is recommended that they stay home until a plan is established and notify healthcare facilities in advance of any visit, ensuring appropriate precautions are taken.

For unvaccinated individuals, receiving the MMR vaccine within 72 hours of exposure may prevent infection or reduce its severity. Although there is no specific antiviral treatment for measles, supportive care involves rest and hydration. Hospitalisation may be necessary for severe cases, particularly when symptoms indicative of pneumonia or dehydration are present. Vitamin A supplementation may also aid children with severe measles cases, promoting immune support during recovery.

In conclusion, vigilance is crucial following the measles exposure in Perth, and individuals are encouraged to seek medical advice if they experience any symptoms or suspect they have been affected.
