Lachie Neale has stated that he is still far from making a definitive choice regarding his AFL future, but he expresses optimism about potentially extending his stay with the Brisbane Lions beyond 2026. The dual Brownlow Medalist has recently faced significant attention related to his personal life, particularly following his separation from his wife Jules and their relocation to Perth with their children.

With Neale’s contract concluding at the end of the 2026 season, there is growing speculation that he could rejoin a Western Australian club to be closer to his family. Before his milestone 300th AFL game against Melbourne, Neale conveyed his commitment to the Lions, affirming, “I love this football club.” He emphasised his intention to explore all options while making a decision over the next few months.

When discussing his future, Neale highlighted that personal happiness and family are paramount in his decision-making process. “There’s a lot that will go into that decision. Everything. Family, football, my own happiness,” he remarked. He expressed a strong desire to continue competing for premierships and hopes to remain with the Lions until he is 36. “I set myself up to have a strong year, and I feel great physically, so hopefully, I’ve got a few more years ahead,” he added.

Additionally, this week is particularly noteworthy for Neale, as he shares the spotlight with Brisbane Lions co-captain Josh Dunkley, who is also celebrating his 200th AFL game. Neale reflected on the emotional nature of the occasion, stating, “To share it with ‘Dunks’ is a special honour. He’s my favourite teammate, so it will be a real treat to run out together, and hopefully we can secure a win.”

The game against Melbourne at the MCG holds additional significance, marking the Lions’ first visit to the venue since their grand final victory. “Walking into the rooms will evoke some great memories, but we need to switch our focus to the game,” Neale said, preparing to face a strong opponent. The back-to-back premiers enter this match sitting sixth on the ladder, looking to improve their position against a competitive Demons side.
